Routes around the city, starting from Bicyclean Helsinki

Easy Trip around center of Helsinki

Easy bike ride. Great for any fitness level. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

Following the route you can stop here:

1: Kaivopuisto, a great park with an amazing view over the baltic sea and the islands of Helsinki

2: Eiranranta, nice bike lane with many cafés on the left hand side with a view to the sea

3: Ruoholahti, ride along the canal and follow the route through the park and bay of Lapinlahti

4: Hietaniemi: there is the large cemetary on the right and when you follow the path you can stop at the main beach of Helsinki

5: Töölö: on the left hand side you will find the famous Café Regatta and on the right hand side you will find the Sibelius park and the Sibelius monument

6: Töölö: at the bay of the Töölöjärvi is the National Opera, Finlandia House, a park and at the end of the park you can see the famous library Oodi

You can get to the other side going over the bridge over the railway tracks or via the Kaisaniemen tunnel next to Oodi - then along the Kaisaniemi park and follow the coastline of Kruununhaka back to Bicyclean Helsinki on Katajanokka.

Explore the islands from Katajanokka around Seurasaarenselkä

Intermediate bike ride. Good fitness required. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

1: Kaivopuisto, a great park with an amazing view over the baltic sea and the islands of Helsinki. Then follow the coastline.

2: Ruoholahti: enjoy the ride along the canal and cross the bridge to Lauttasaari (3).

4:Along the coastline of Lauttasaari are some beaches like Veijarinvuori beach.

5: After leaving Lauttasaari you can ride over the islands of Kaskisaari, Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari.  On Kuusisaari you find the Villa Gyllenberg and the Didrichsen art museum.

6: At Tamminiemi is another art museum or you go right and follow the path to Seurasaari, a beautiful island with an open air museum.

7: Back through the city you can enjoy the route along the lake of Töölö and the parks around it.

Loop tour from Katajanokka to Otaniemi

Intermediate bike ride. Good fitness required.

Starting at our shop, Bicyclean Helsinki, you can have a look at the icebreaker fleet.

The route goes like Route 1 and 2 but then extends to Otaniemi and Laajalahti.

1: Lehtisaari: Cross the island on the left hand side, then follow the Otaniemi coastal trail, the most beautiful part of the tour.

2: Laajalahti: You can ride your bike along the nature reserve of Laajalahti.

3: Munkkiniemi: Before you cross the bridge to Munkkiniemi you can stop and visit the Gallen-Kallela museum and then follow the route along the coastline of Munkkiniemi.

4: Meilahti: Before the island Seurasaari, where you can ride a nice loop around the island, which is also a open air museum, you can visit the Presidential museum.

Ride along the coast and back through Central Park

Expert bike ride. Good fitness required. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

1: Hietalahti: Following the route you can stop at Hietalahti Market.

2: Tapiola: After crossing the bridges to Tapiola, you can ride along the coastline of Espoo. 

3: Saunalahti: Turn right into the Central Park of Espoo and enjoy the beautiful nature of Finland.

4: Lehtisaari: Enjoy the amazing view of Laajalahti while crossing the islands back to the center of Helsinki.

Explore finnish nature: Ride to Tuomarinkylä and Kulosaari

Expert bike ride. Good fitness required. 

1: Straight from Katajanokka through the City Center, than ride north onto Mannerheimintie, you will find the KIASMA museum on the right side.

2: Laakso: In the park you will will find the Laakso rock shelter observation tower.

3: Haltiavuori: Close to the Haltiavuori is a rest area with benches and tables for picnics.

4:Pihlajisto: Before crossing the railways you can stop at one of the grill spots at Vantaanjoki, the river.

5: Purolahti: If you need a quiet break: here is a birdwatching tower.

6: Herttoniemi: If you are cycling on the gravel path you ride through the nature reserve.

7: Mustikkamaa: Nice, little island where you can stop at the beach or at the park- and have a picnic.

Ride from Katajanokka to Aurinkolahti

Expert bike ride. Good fitness required. 

Start at Bicyclean Helsinki as usual, then go north-east to Hakaniemi, along Kulosaari, Herttoniemi, Tammisalo to Vuosaari.

1: Rastila, after the Vuosaari bridge take a loop along the coast and through the forest of Meri-Rastila and the Ramsinniemi Nature conservation area.

2: Vuosaari: Ride along the coastline, find many different cafes and restaurants and also the beach of Aurinkolahti. After passing the harbour you can ride through the forest of Uutela.

3: Mustavuori-Porvarinlahti: From Uutela go north through the beautiful and quiet forest and have a look at the Vuosaaren huippu.

4: Viikki: Ride along the science trail and through the fields of Viikki.

5: Arabia: Enjoy the coastal path around Arabianranta and come back to Katajanokka.

Recommended places to visit

Kirkkonummi

The city lies to the west of Helsinki. In Kirkkonummi you can enjoy the beautiful nature sites, go golfing, horse riding, hiking, and canoeing, visit different museums or the prize-winning Fyyri library buidling.

Close to Kirkkonummi you will find the recreational area and nature reserve of Porkkalanniemi.

Porvoo

Take a long distance ride to Porvoo, the second oldest city in Finland.

The city is surrounded by a National Urban Park. In the old city of Porvoo you will see the red-ochre painted riverside warehouses and colorful wooden houses in the cobbled streets. A church from the 15th century lies in the middle of the town. You can go to the outdoor museum Postimäki or visit the Pellinge archipelago.

Finland’s national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg lived in Porvoo with his family, their house is now a museum. Another famous Finn was Albert Edelfelt. The painter spent many summers painting in Porvoo. You can visit Albert Edelfelt Studio Museum and Villa Albert.

Nuuksio National Park

Nuuksio is the second-closest National Park north-west to Helsinki.

The park is an area of forest and lakes, it contains hiking and biking trails and designated spots for camping and grilling.

Sipoo and Sipoonkorpi National Park

The Sipoonkorpi National Park is located north-east to Helsinki.

The area is mostly covered by spruce forest, swamps and cultural landscape and a river. You can find marked trails for hiking and mountain biking.

Grilling and camping is allowed in designated spots.

Lake Tuusula

The Lake Tuusula is not far away from Helsinki, surrounded by forests and parks. There are also many cafés and restaurants around the lake.

You can easily take a loop tour around the lake by bike (about 2h, about 30 km).

In the city Tuusula is the Halosenniemi museum located, the former studio of famous finnish painter Pekka Halonen and the Aleksis Kivi memorial cottage. Close to the cottage is the Fjällbo Park.

In Järvenpää you find the house Ainola, the home of Jean Sibelius.

Lake Bodom

In Espoo, close to Nuuksio is a huge lake (you might have heard of) - the lake of Bodom. It is surrounded by a forest . There is a recreational area, a beach and many activity opportunities.

Next to the Bodominjärvi is the Matalajärvi, a lake with a valuable birdlife and a birdwatching tower on the shore.
